"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: The sender also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Several high-profile supporters have also coveted the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a close trio. Their music videos repeatedly show them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire people to start a band."

"And thus all gets an invitation to be the fourth Haim sister."

Historic Nod

The band are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," continues Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The project came out of a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes follow departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That newfound resilience required a new sound – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global fan base.

But the band will always be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
