Administration officials confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and vowed to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended before then.

The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the final days of the previous month but not the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.
